Emerging Leaders

The Emerging Leaders at Emory Program provides development for Emory's mid-level leaders to help them prepare for more strategic roles within the university.

About this Program

Utilizing a combination of internal and external facilitators, the Emerging Leaders at Emory Program is specifically targeted to mid-level leaders from all segments of the university (excluding Emory Healthcare). Offered in odd-numbered years, the program provides leadership development activities that:

  • Provide competency-based learning experiences and ongoing development activities
  • Guide self-discovery and facilitate awareness of leadership strengths and development activities
  • Provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and the opportunity to build collaborative networks
  • Create leaders that serve as role models to others

Program Goals

The goals of the Emerging Leaders at Emory Program are to:

  • Strengthen leadership performance across the university
  • Develop a broader skill set
  • Develop a broader mind set

Nomination and Selection Process

Candidates must be nominated by their senior leadership and be considered high potential to move into a more strategic role.

Each candidate must meet the following criteria to be considered for the program:

  • Hold a mid-level leadership position
  • Have at least one year of full-time service with Emory University
  • Demonstrate high performance in professional experience
  • Regarded as a high potential applicant for future advancement

Faculty members and principal investigators are eligible to participate in the program.

To identify potential candidates, the Senior Director of Learning and Organizational Development and the Director of Learning and Development will meet with senior leaders across the university to discuss their talent and solicit nominations.

A selection committee will review all nominations and select participants for the program based on the leadership competencies, as well as their diverse personal, educational and experiential backgrounds.

Up to 20 applicants who represent a cross-section of the university are invited to participate.

Expectations

Attendance is mandatory for all program events, including the kick-off, all classes and seminars, and the program graduation.

Curriculum

Participants will attend engaging, interactive sessions that explore three key areas of focus:

  1. Leading self - Personal effectiveness and communication
  2. Leading others - People management and cultivating relationships/partnerships
  3. Leading the business - Strategic thinking, decision making and change management

In addition to the workshop sessions, participants will:

  • Receive assessments and feedback
  • Participate in peer-to-peer coaching
  • Be mentored by previous Excellence Through Leadership (ETL) participants
  • Have exposure to senior leadership of the university
  • Complete guided reflection as part of their journey in the program
