Emory Healthcare Announces Tobacco Use Surcharge for 2011

Starting January 1, 2011, Emory Healthcare will add a surcharge to their health plan premium for those employees and/or spouses/SSDPs that use tobacco products and are enrolled in healthcare’s medical insurance. There will not be a tobacco use surcharge for University employees in 2011.

Emory Healthcare will announce to their employees Monday, July 12, that they will be implementing a tobacco use surcharge to the health plan premium beginning January 1, 2011. The purpose of this surcharge is to support tobacco cessation and to set a positive example for their patients and the community – and to let their employees know the importance of being tobacco free.

The University is currently in the process of reviewing the feasibility and details of the tobacco use surcharge for possible future implementation. There will not be a tobacco use surcharge to the health plan premium for University employees in 2011.

However, if faculty and staff are interested in learning more about the tobacco cessation programs available to them, they can visit the Health Spotlight web site – www.hr.emory.edu/healthspotlight or contact the Faculty Staff Assistance Program at 404-727-4328.
