New Child Care Resources for Emory Employees

For many Emory faculty and staff parents, the COVID-19 pandemic has made back-to-school more challenging. That’s why Emory HR Work Life is pleased to announce several new options that may help you and your family during this time.

  1. YMCA at Miller-Ward Alumni House: a new program at the Miller Ward Alumni House is run by the YMCA and is open to employees of Emory University and Emory Healthcare. YMCA staff will support children (grades K-6) in completing their online/remote learning.

  2. Emory Employee-Student Job Network Resume Books: review a book of resumes from Emory undergraduate students who are seeking part-time work for childcare and tutoring services.

  3. Komae, Cooperative Childcare App: enables parents to identify and vet families with similar parenting styles and COVID-19 hygiene practices to build a pod for shared childcare and education.

MORE NEWS YOU CAN USE

Fall Onboarding Process
Emory University has established a comprehensive clearance process for faculty/staff who plan to be on the Atlanta and Oxford campuses this fall. Before coming to campus, you must first complete a five-step onboarding clearance process. You should complete the onboarding tasks if you anticipate that you will be on campus at any time this fall. This includes anyone who would come to campus occasionally. It is recommended that everyone go ahead and complete the process now so that you understand the requirements and have the clearance in the event you need to go to campus. Having the clearance, however, does not mean you are approved to work on campus on a regular basis. Your unit will notify you when you can do this. Learn more.

Emory Votes Initiative Launches New Website
To help the Emory community register and vote this fall, the Emory Votes Initiative (EVI) has launched a fresh website. On it you can sign up for TurboVote, an online platform that helps you check or update your voter registration or register for the first time. On its Path to the Polls page, you can consider your voting options: by-mail voting, in-person early voting, or voting on Election Day. EVI also suggests ways you can help others vote in this election, in particular by stepping up as a poll worker. Read more.

Is Your Address and Personal Information Up-To-Date in Self-Service?
HR will soon be mailing important information about annual benefits enrollment, so now is a good time to go into Self-Service/PeopleSoft and look over your personal information. Using Self-Service, you can update your mailing address, emergency contacts, phone numbers, marital status, and more.

Due to federal regulations, we are also collecting data on veteran and disability status. While completion of this information is optional, we encourage you to complete it as it helps us to comply with federal guidelines.

Steps to Check your Personal Information:

  1. Log on to Self-Service at http://leo.cc.emory.edu
  2. Click the Personal Information tile
  3. Click the Personal Details tile

You can go into each menu item and update your information as needed and then click Save. For your address, please note that both your local and/or permanent address MUST be a U.S. address in order for your W-2 form to be mailed to you.

There Is Still Time to Complete Your 2020 Incentives

Learn techniques that help you to communicate more productively with your children. You’ll learn about different communication styles and how to communicate effectively, starting in early childhood. The seminar details parental techniques that minimize the “whatevers”—from paying attention and minimizing distractions during conversations to pausing for 30 seconds before engaging the child in a response. You’ll also learn to avoid negative communication styles that hamper conversation and increase conflict. Presented by WorkPlace Options, September 15, 2020 12:00pm. Register. If you have questions about this webinar or Emory University WorkLife benefits, please contact Mary Ellen Eady, 404-727-4177.

Preparing to Work and Parent Through a COVID Kind of School Year – Part Three
There are a lot of uncertainties for everyone as we prepare for the 2020-21 school year. As a parent, it is especially difficult to know how to plan for this year. While we all want to see children return to in-person classrooms, we know that the reality is that many students will at least begin their school year virtually. Parents really need to do what they can to plan for all scenarios: In-person, Remote Learning, and a Hybrid of both plans. We are likely to see one or all these scenarios play out throughout this school year.  The saying, “It takes a village to raise a child” is especially true right now. We have compiled some tips to help parents prepare for these different scenarios and help them manage remote work and school under one roof once again. This is part 3 of a 3-part series. Read Part 3.
