Know Your Numbers FAQ's

  • What is a biometric screening?

“Biometric” values are important measures of a person’s health status and include measurements of a person’s height, weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), body composition, blood pressure, cholesterol (via finger stick), glucose (via finger stick), waist circumference, and for some employees, HbA1c. Emory employees will meet with health screening professionals from Provant (an independent third-party) at multiple screening stations for approximately 15 minutes. Although fasting is not required for the screening, for employees who decide to fast, and have a FASTING glucose value greater than 100mg/dL, you will be offered a more precise test – “HbA1c.” This additional test will add 5-7 minutes to your screening time. You will be provided with a review of your personal numbers and how to understand how your measurements compared to national guidelines. The screener will discuss possible next steps that you may want to take after the screening. Such steps may include: discussing your screening results with your doctor, participating in a Healthy Emory program, and/or participating in other programs offered at Emory that are designed to improve your personal health and well-being.

  • What is an "HbA1c" test?

Hemoglobin A1C provides an average value of blood glucose (“sugar”) control over a 3-month period and may be used in conjunction with home blood glucose monitoring as part of a diabetic management program. Hemoglobin A1C may also be used to detect pre-diabetes when used as a stand-alone screening.

  • Can I participate in the onsite biometric screening during work hours?

Yes, employees can participate in the onsite biometric screening during work hours.

  • How long will my biometric screening take?

Your onsite biometric screening will take approximately 15 minutes. If you have decided to fast and have an elevated glucose level (>100 mg/dL), Provant will also conduct the A1C test which adds roughly 5-7 minutes to your screening.

  • Do I have to make an appointment, or can I "walk-in" at a day and time that is convenient for me?

Appointments are very highly recommended and are given priority over walk-ins. To ensure that you have a space at the screening event at your desired location, day and time that works best for your own schedule, please schedule your screening at least four (4) weeks in advance. A limited number of “walk-ins” will be available at each screening event; however, there may be a wait depending on the screening clinic flow at that time.

  • Can I eat or drink anything before the screening, or do I need to "fast?

Fasting is not required; you may choose to fast or not. The screener will ask you if you have “fasted” or not and will conduct the screening accordingly.

  • I can't attend an onsite screening. What other options are available to me to earn my incentive?

If you are unable to attend one of these scheduled events or if there are no events scheduled at your location, you will also have the option to go to your physician’s office to have the appropriate measures taken. This can be done at your regular annual preventive exam visit. You can find this form on the Provant website by logging in and selecting the “Primary Care Physician” option. The blood draw will be “venipuncture;” this process obtains a blood sample through a vein in your arm. A physician fax form will be completed by your physician and faxed to Provant. Please confirm with your physician that your visit is a preventive exam visit to ensure that your physician’s visit is recorded (“coded”) appropriately. If you have had a regular preventive visit at your physician’s office after November 15, 2016, you may ask your primary care physician to complete and fax the physician form to Provant. This form will be posted after January 1, 2017. Please note that this method will take longer to record your screening results in the Aetna system.

  • What will happen with my biometric screening data? Who will have access to my personal data? How is my confidentiality protected?

Emory has chosen Provant as our third-party business partner. Provant will share your biometric screening data with Aetna to allow Aetna to administer your health plan incentive for completing the screening and the online health assessment (“Compass”). Emory will not have access to individual-level data. Emory will use the aggregate data to understand the overall health trends of our employees. This will enable Emory to provide enhanced health & wellness services to better meet employees’ needs. Provant protects all screening data through secure processes, procedures and protocols to ensure confidentiality and HIPAA compliance. Please read Provant’s Privacy Policy.

  • There is not a biometric screening offered at my location. Why?

  • What type of confirmation will I receive as evidence that I have completed my biometric screening?

You will receive a business card size document (“Your Health Score Card”) from Provant at the end of your onsite biometric screening. The screening staff will write the date of your screening and your personal screening values will be recorded on this card. Please keep it for your records as evidence that you have completed a biometric screening. If you use (or have used) your annual wellness visit at your doctor’s office to gather the measurements, please keep a copy of the Physician Fax Form for your records as evidence that you have completed a screening at your doctor’s office. Use your copy of your results to enter the biometric values into your online health assessment.
