Long Term Disability

Emory offers a Long Term Disability (LTD) benefit through UNUM to provide an income in the event you become disabled due to an injury or illness that is not work-related.

About LTD Coverage

Group Long Term Disability

This LTD Plan provides a benefit equal to 66 2/3% of your monthly earnings from the Emory Clinic in the event you are unable to work due to a non-work-related injury or illness. With LTD, there is a 180-day elimination period. The LTD coverage has a monthly maximum benefit of $12,000.

You must enroll within 31 days from your date of hire. You pay 100% of the cost of coverage. If you do not enroll when initially eligible, you must go through the Evidence of Insurability (EOI) process.

Definition of Total Disability:

You are disabled when UNUM determines that due to your sickness or injury:

  1. You are unable to perform the material and substantial duties of your regular occupation and are not working in your regular occupation or any other occupation.

    OR
  2. You are unable to perform one or more of the material and substantial duties of your regular occupation, and you have a 20% or more loss in your indexed monthly earnings while working in your regular occupation or in any occupation.


Individual Disability Insurance (IDI) Option

All benefits-eligible members earning at least $216,000 from Emory Clinic may enroll in IDI coverage if they are also enrolled in the group LTD Plan. You must enroll within 31 days from your date of hire or date of eligibility. If you do not enroll when initially eligible, you must go through the Evidence of Insurability process.

IDI coverage supplements your group LTD Plan and provides an enhanced level of income protection in the event of disability. With IDI coverage you can receive a benefit equal to 60% of insurable income in excess of $216,000. The maximum benefit is $7,500 per month.

The IDI policy is your own policy. You can keep the coverage even if you change employers in the future. You also have the option to exchange your IDI policy for Long Term Care policy between the ages of 60-70.

Eligibility

Benefits-eligible members earning $10,000 or more annually and who Emory Clinic employs and pays as a:

  • Physician, PhD involved with patient care
  • Executive Administrator
  • Other Clinic Executive in active employment in the United States with Emory Clinic

Cost

Long Term Disability

You pay 100% of the cost of Long Term Disability. The premium is $1.25 per $100 of your covered monthly income from the Emory Clinic.

Individual Disability Insurance (IDI)

Premiums for Individual Disability Insurance (IDI) will be calculated by UNUM and will be provided to newly eligible members prior to enrollment.

How to Enroll

To Enroll in Long Term Disability

Eligible members must enroll online through Self-Service within 31 days of becoming eligible for coverage. If you do not enroll within 31 days of eligibility and would like coverage at a later date, you must provide Evidence of Insurability (EOI) to gain coverage, subject to approval by UNUM.

To Enroll in the Individual Disability Insurance Option

Members will receive enrollment information via regular mail from UNUM when initially eligible for coverage.
